FAQs
I’m away for part of the summer, can I still participate?
Yes, while we would love to have everyone for the whole 8 weeks, we understand people travel and may not be able to attend everything. We can accommodate and provide training plans that can be done with little or no equipment to keep up while away.
What if I already lift with my school?
For our multi-sport athletes, we understand there’s a good chance you are already lifting with your football team over the summer. We can modify your training program to accommodate what you are doing outside the academy. This may be shifting your training with us to a more speed, mobility, accessory or skill-based program to adjust for what you need and aren’t getting with your other training.
I have my own gym; can I just train there?
We can provide online training for the gym sessions, for those who live further away or have a gym they already train at. Some of the training sessions may have to be and can be modified based on where you train and equipment available. However, we can’t replicate the environment and coaching we are building in house by having groups of our rugby athletes training together. We want to feed off each other’s energy to push each other a new level.
I’m traveling from far and can’t be in the area for every session, what should I do?
To accommodate those who are traveling from further away for The Academy, we can create a hybrid program for. We will be offering gym training times before/after our field sessions so you can get as much in while you’re in the area. For days we don’t have field training sessions we can give you an online training program for you to do when you can’t make the ride down to HQ.
Is everyone allowed to join? Are there tryouts?
The Academy is for experienced rugby players looking to continue playing at the next level, whatever that may be. We are looking to for a player pool of 40-50 high performing players from any club or school! Based off the interest forms submitted we will create a player pool for those we believe is a good fit for the Academy.
I’m brand new/just started playing rugby, should I apply?
Yes, we would love for everyone that wants to train and improve their rugby skills to fill out a form truthfully no matter their experience level. While we may deem the Academy is a little advanced for you, we have other offerings that may be more suited for your experience level. The last thing we want is for players to be lost or overwhelmed during sessions and slow down other players.
What about Summer 7’s?
We all love Summer 7’s, but I big issue with USA Rugby is the lack of 15’s experience. Our field sessions won’t always be the most physically demanding but rather more technically and tactically demanding. Typically, Summer 7’s practices are Tues/Thurs so our training schedule looks to avoid those days so you can go participate with your school/club as well.
Why is it so expensive?
We understand that the cost of the academy isn’t cheap, but we are trying to provide an experience like no other. Having a cost associated will also increase the commitment and motivation for the session to get the most out of it. We believe that we will deliver insane value for our players and at the end of the summer you will believe you have gotten your money’s worth and more. We are fully player funded at the moment and have to cover expenses such as field rental fees, gym expenses, kits, coach’s pay and athletic trainer/physical therapists. If the cost is the deciding factor of your participation, please let us know. We have a few select need based financial scholarships.
